Looking for: parents of Anthonie Jan Dubel, born in Jun 1837 in Holland
I am searching for the parents of Anthonie Jan Dubel, born in Jun 1837 in Holland. According to the 1900 census in Louisiana, U.S.A., he calls himself John Dubell in the Census, and is married to Josephine Barr and they have 3 sons and 3 daughters in 1900. He is 62 years old and married 26 years. Josephine is 40.
He was wrongly thought to be the son of Anthonie Dubel and Hendrica Van Beek, But that Anthonie Jan died in Utrecht in 1883 never having married. So if you have any information about this family , I would like to hear from you. I will exchange any information I have about this family ,which is a lot.

I did a search on Genlias, the name Dubel did come up, it doesn't seem to be a very common name. Between 1830 and 1845 it came up with 17 births. The closest to the name that came up was:

I dont think that are the right parents because that couple already get other children in 1835, 1836, 1837 and 1839 of which none is the wanted Anthonie Jan DubelBertil | 9 apr 2009 | 07:44

Thanks for your response, but as the next notice to this mentioned, those are not the parents of Anthonie Jan, because they have other children in that time slot. One possibility is Willem George Frederik Dubel, abt 1798), the brother of Anthonie Lambertus Dubel(1782). He has a son Anthonie born in 1835 and died the same year. That was their fifth child ,so it's possible he had another Anthonie in 1837, But I've not been able to find him as yet. He may have moved away from The Hague, after the death of that child, so it may be found in another location. I appreciate you taking the time to answer the post. John Prins
ps: A whole clan of Dubells in Louisiana are eagerly awaiting and working to find this elusive Anthonie Jan Dubel, or John Dubell as he calls himself on the 1900 census in the States.

Thank You Keren
Yes , I am aware of that rootsweb notice, that's the fourth cousin of me that I'm e-mailing with in Louisiana.
Josephine Barr was married 20 Oct 1874 Stafford's Landing,Catahoula Parish ,Louisiana, U.S.A.
The understanding of that cousin in Louisiana was that Anhonie Jan Dubel was from Holland, but that's not cast in stone I suppose, so yes Germany may be a possibility.

It is indeed imperative to find the marriage certificate (and/or his naturalization papers). The name Anthonie Jan Dubel must have come from somewhere; same for the year and month of his birth.
[Note: Jan is a Dutch name; not quite a German one (would be Johann); it can be East-European as well...]
John, you wrote: According to the 1900 census in Louisiana, U.S.A., he calls himself John Dubell in the Census, and is married to Josephine Barr and they have 3 sons and 3 daughters in 1900. He is 62 years old and married 26 years. Josephine is 40.
Thus: Josephine (according to the 1900 census) is - at that time [in 1900]- 40 years old? John Dubell is then 62 years old, married 26 years...[I suppose meant here is 'married with Josephine'?]. This suggests that Josephine was 14 years old at the time of marriage. -- Is this information correct?

According to the records of the 1900 US Census the couple had 12 children of which 7 were still alive. On the 1910 Census John and his wife and three children were living at the policy jury ward. It states that he was born in Holland, still had the Dutch nationality and that he was 73 years old. It also states that the couple had 12 children, but in 1910 only 6 are still alive. In 1920 John was still a boarder at the police jury ward, but there is no mentioning of other family members. What is interesting: he all of a sudden is 60 years and born in Louisiana. Conclusion: never trust Census records!

Hi Marleen.
Thank you for your input. Sorry about the time delay of my response. Yes, Josephine was born in Aug 1859, so that would make her possibly 15 in 1900.John Dubell became an American citizen in 1885, according to the following :"
Personally came and appeared before me the ___ authority John duBell who being duly sworn declares and says it is his t*** and bonafi*e intentions to become a citizen of the United States and to forever denounce all allieg*an*ce that he may owe to any foreign power prince or potom**e and particulary to King WIlliam the th*** the King of the Netherlands he further swears that he will support the constitution and laws of the United States and the laws and constitution of this state and discharge and p**f*m all the duties as a citizen ____ to the best of his ability so help him God.Sworn to and sub****
before me this 20th December 1885 O.H. E***l
Clerk 7th District signed: John du Bell This was sent to me by Lisa Lier from Louisiana just now ,so that establishes that he was from the Netherlands, I would think. And in 1910 he would be 72, so that's right. About the number of children , there are 3 sons and 3 daughters listed on the 1900 census. As to him still being a dutch citizen, did they have dual citizenship in those days? I have no access to the 1910 census, so how many children were there living in 1910? I have 12 listed in my files. For 5 of them the death dates are missing. Thanks for your interest. Best wishes, John

John,
As far as you have shared here: The name of your ancestor is registered as John [= Jan] Dubel(l) in the 1900 Census and in the 1885 naturalization application/papers, --- as yet...not found with the two first names Anthonie Jan [Anthony John]? Perhaps one should start searching for a Jan Dubel and forget about the Anthonie Jan Dubel? Unless you have proof that he is also registered (marriage certificate?) as Anthonie Jan... - Regards,

Hi Helena
You are right, the name Anthony may have slipped in when somebody mistook the word 'authority" in front of Jan Dubell's name in the naturalization papers.I have been looking for Jan Dubel(as they usually spell it in the Netherlands)for a while already, without any success, I might add. I have about 4 Jan Dubels in my files but all the wrong dates.Best wishes, John
