Military Prison Oegstgeest
I have fielded this question some years ago. Someone was going to try and find out, but till now I have never heard another thing. So here goes....My GrGrGrandfather
KLAAS FREERKS TULP, born 27 Sep 1814, Appingedam, died 17 Nov 1846, as an inmate in a military prison at Oegstgeest, South Holland. As he was exempted from military service we have no idea at this time why he was there. At his time of death there was an epidemic of some kind in that area. Many in that prison died. He married 30 Nov 1838, Loppersum, to TIETJE HENDRICUS TICHELAAR, b. 3 Apr 1813, Loppersum, d. 16 Mar 1848, Loppersum. Tietjes parents were Hendricus Pieters Tichelaar and Catharina Hendrina Eises, d. 16 Jun 1837.
So why and how long was he there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have also tried to get some info from Apingedam but they never bothered with any type of an answer.

Keren,
Thank you for your help.
As his wife and him married in and she was born in Loppersum I would think they lived there. I won't be home until Tuesday so can check for more info then
Klaas' wife was Tietje Hendricus Tichelaar, b. 13 Apr 1813, m. 30 Nov 1838, d. 16 Mar 1848, all in Loppersum. They had 2 kids.
Maybe he replaced someone else in the military for a bunch of money??

Military Prison Oegstgeest
Hello Frans,
If the record says he was 'militair' (that is; a military person) then he is definitely in the military. It might very well be possible that he acted as a 'plaatsvervanger' (replacement) for someone else who was drafted.
The service records of that period are held at the Nationaal Archief in Den Haag, as Keren stated earlier in this thread. Without knowledge of the unit he was in however, it will be a long search.
A possibility to obtain knowledge about the unit is to check the 'huwelijkse bijlagen' (marriage annexes). These might contain a certificate of a military unit. Given the date of marriage (way before the period he served in the military) the chances are slim these will be there. Another possibility is to check the court-martial records of the period. Again, that will take some expert knowledge to find out which court martial sent him to prison.
I am sorry I can't give some specific help, just some vague pointers,
Wilco

Hi Frans, Keren and Wilco,
Yesterday I e-mailed Frans privately but I think it's wise to respond via this forum too.
I do have an ancestor who was imprisoned in Oegstgeest.
Via the website of the Noord-Hollands Archief you can find an index of names of people who
had to appear for the Court Martial in Haarlem. This is the link:
http://www.noordhollandsarchief.org/?pc_id=3&pp_id=167
Of course I did a look-up for Frank but KLAAS FREERKS TULP wasn't sentenced in Haarlem.
But in the city of Groningen they also had a Court Martial and there's a big chance he appeared
before the magistrates there.
The sentences of the "Krijgsraad Provincie Groningen" are only accessible in the Groningen
Archives. The "toegangsnummer" is 147 and timeframe 1841 - November 1846.
Maybe Frank can e-mail them : groningerarchieven.nl" href="mailto:info
groningerarchieven.nl" target="_blank">info
groningerarchieven.nl
or write a letter : Postadres:

or maybe some kind soul can do a look-up : Bezoekadres:

There are 2 things I find strange in the case of Klaas Freerks Tulp;
1) He's a married man with 2 small children. Why did he enlist ?
2) Why isn't his spouse, Tietje Hendrikus Tichelaar mentioned on his death certificate ?
There are more questions than answers at the moment and I hope Frank will find/get the
answer soon !
Happy hunting everyone,
Groetjes,

hoi Kèren and all,
I agree with you, I also think it's a mistake, but when he didn't appear for the Court Martial in
Groningen I think we have to turn our attention to the court in Appingedam.
I also would like to know what's on his wifes' death certificate and on the marriage certificate
of his daughter. She was a minor when she married.
Frank do you have those certificates ?
Does anyone know if there are old newspapers online for Groningen ?
Here in Zeeland the Zeeuws Archief and the Zeeuwse Bibliotheek are very busy to put
everything on the internet. Hopefully they do the same in Groningen soon.
Well I think we have to wait till Frans is home Tuesday and has a chance to study his
records.
Have a great evening,
Groetjes,

Hoi E.L. ,
Jammer genoeg is de vrouw van Klaas in Loppersum overleden en zijn dochter is
in Groningen getrouwd.

Beste allemaal
thank you all for your pointers and help. The death cert of Klaas in short states...
"On 17 N0v 1846 Oegstgeest verscheen Teunis de Jong 36 gevaningsbewaarder en Henry Robert de Meer zonder beroep that op deze datum om 4 uur in de nacht in het huis # ( hard to read but could be honderd achtig, but we know from likewise certs that it was the prison formerly het Pesthuys) overleeden is Klaas Tulp zoon van Freerk Klaassens en Helena Bastiaan Siewerts van beroep militair, oud 32 and geboren te Appingedam, gewoond hebbende alhier (Oegstgeest) doch laatst te Appingedam prov Groningen. Onderteekend......"
No mentioning of his wife. On her death cert it states "Tietje Hendricus Tichelaar, 34, died 16 Maart 1848, Loppersum, wife of Klaas Freerks Tulp."
His son's wedding cert just state both parents
And so the riddle goes on. I did sent a e-mail to Appingedam some time ago but never got any type of an answer. So what's next ? I guess I'll try and see if someone in Groningen could have a look for me.
Have a good one Frans

Goedenavond medespeurders,

The "huwelijks bijlagen" of the son Freerk tell us that the father Klaas died in Oegstgeest and the mother Tietje died in Loppersum. The kids were born in Appingedam and Klaas' death cert stated that he previously lived in Appingedam.
His Nationaal Militie cert stated that he did not need to serve . He pulled #56 in 1833.
