Mijn eerste onderwerp - English - Dank U!

Hallo!

Sorry, ik spreek nog geen Nederlands.

Does anyone speak English? Or Translate? Google isn't the best for that.

I was wondering if any brilliant person may help me.

I have started researching my family and can find information on Genlias and Digitale Stamboom Portaal.

But then I find other people's families and they have so much more information!

I am very much a beginner. I have researched in my English tree well now and want to go on to the Dutch side.

May I please ask my questions.

I am most looking for how to find:        -  deaths in the Netherlands (1850's - present) especially 1970's etc

                                                        -  births in the Netherlands (1900's - 1930's) I can see on other people's sites they have so much for this time! But I can't find any records for those times, only before 1900. This is really important!

If I have made any mistakes please tell me.... I can give help to this site later on only if you tell me what I'm doing wrong!

And sorry for only speaking English, I promise I'm learning (I now know the simple words like geboren, overleden etc.)

Thank you so much! I look forward!

DANK U!

Charlie

Hello Charlie,

welcome to this forum! I hope you are enjoying your family tree research, as you may know, once you start getting results, it can get a bit addictive ;-)

I'm not sure if you are aware, but in the Netherlands there is a law regarding privacy. This means that birth records are only made public after 100 years, marriage records after 75 years, and death records after 50 years, so this limits the info that you might be able to find on sites like Genlias. If other people have more recent data, they probably got them in another way. You might try having a look at the website of the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie, www.cbg.nl. Op the top right of the page you can fill in a surname, and when you get results you should look at 'familieberichten', which often are newspaper announcements of deaths, and sometimes marriages. You need an account and credit to be able to view them. BTW, this site also has a version in English.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions, just ask them here at the forum.

The following site can be helpfull. It gives on-line sources of different cities in the Netherlands and abroad.

http://www.geneaknowhow.net/digi/bronnen.html

Another point: so-called gezinskaarten (family cards) are available on-line of the cities Amsterdam, Den Haag and Alkmaar. And if you are looking for information from the region Bommelerwaard:  they have a populationregister on-line.

http://www.streekarchiefbommelerwaard.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=274&Itemid=192

A family card gives information of a family till 1939. So you can find dates of birth, marriage and death.

Kind regards, Ben

Thanks again.

I don't want to be a nuisance. But please understand I don't know Dutch and I'm only just starting, so I'm going slowly so far.

May I ask what really is a family card? Just a brief explanation, I think some sites have explained but I don't really understand (I've had to use google translate and I don't think it's very accurate).

Best Wishes

Charlie

Charlie

On the Amsterdam City Archive site (http://stadsarchief.amsterdam.nl) with the "Voorbeeld"(=example) button one can see examples of registration cards)

Here's an example of a Gezinskaart = Family card

http://stadsarchief.amsterdam.nl/archieven/archiefbank/indexen/gezinskaarten/voorbeeld/index.nl.html

it's mostly self explanatory

all family members are on the card, as well as all their addresses

During the second half of the 19th century, the Dutch municipalities started registrating their inhabitants per adress in books (bevolkingsregister). In the early 20th century it was replaced by a card system per family (gezinskaart). And around 1940 it was replaced by a nation wide card system per person (persoonskaart). In 1994 it was replaced by an electronic version (persoonslijst). The dates of birth, deaths and mariages in these documents are based on the birth, death and mariage certificates.

When a Dutch person is dead for two years his persoonskaart (pre 1994) or persoonslijst (after 1994) is send to the CBG by the municipality where he lived. It is possible to ask for a extract of these at the CBG, but it costs a few Euro's. What happens to the cards of emigrated persons, I don't know.

Charlie, please don't think you're a nuisance. This forum is a place for questions, for both new and experienced family tree researchers. There are some very knowledgeable people in this field of research, and some even speak English ;-) So don't hesitate to ask questions! Glad to hear that you've already gotten some results.

Hi,

I just have one more question - Am I right that I will have to pay or use credits to view the family cards? I've found some relevant to me, and it's fine if I need to pay, but I just want to make sure there's no way to get them without paying so I don't waste my money.

Thank you for explaining. I've got enough links and sites to go on for days and I'll be very busy.

Kind Regards

Charlie

Hi Charlie, you can see all the information from the Stadsarchief Amsterdam for free on the computers that are placed in de Stadsarchief Amsterdam at the Vijzelstraat (for exact adress, see the site).

Maybe you can tell what you are looking for exactly? So we might help you a bit.

Hi,

I live in Australia so it makes it a little hard, if I can access something it would have to be via internet.

Okay, for this example, I've gone on to the Amsterdam archive site and found the family card of my great-great-grandfather.

I can see a very blurred image of it but to be able to read it I think I have to pay. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right, so I dont' spend money when I don't have to.

Sorry for being slow!

Thank you,

Charlie
