Dear Mrs. Bregitte: With all my respect and sympathy, according to the information that I have compiled and analyzed, in detail, for more than 10 years, I must refute your affirmations.

Firstly: Lijsabet Jans Spek married Jacob Dirksz Pool and not Cornelis Dirksz Pool as you quote.

Secondly: In absence of marriage and death books, and based solely on baptismal documents and the early fading of the Veljepiek surname, I concluded that Cornelis Dirksz Veljepiek and Cornelis Dirksz Pool were the same person. For unknown reasons, between 1743 and 1750 Cornelis Dirksz used his maternal surname, Veljepiek. From 1753 onwards - as recorded in the baptism's book of his last three children - Cornelis Dirksz returns to using her paternal surname, that is to say, the surname Pool.

Thirdly: Cornelis Dirksz's mother - Grietje Cornelis Veljepiek - was the only child of Cornelis Jacobsz Veljepiek. So, with no siblings, is very unlikely that the Veljepiek surname has extended beyond herself. Believe me, I searched intensely, but after Grietje the surname Veljepiek (or Feljepiek) disappears from Kolhorn and its surroundings forever.

Fourthly: Maartje Jans Waart (or de Waart) was the mother of seven children, all begotten by the same Cornelis Dirksz: Dirk (01-01-1743) Dirk (06-04-1744) Jan (21-02-1748) Sijmon (15-11- 1750) Grietje (02-09-1753) Neel (16-05-1756) and Gerrit (14-10-1759). My ancestor, Jan Cornelisz Pool - born in Kolhorn - died in Edam in April 1813 and, as the death certificate indicates, at 65 years of age. This tells us that he was born around the year 1748. The only Jan Cornelisz baptized near that date - February 1748 - was Jan Cornelisz Veljepiek, the son of Cornelis Dirksz Veljepiek and (as a strong point of affirmation) Maartje Jans Waart. Do not you think very casual that both, Jan Cornelis Veljepiek and Jan Cornelisz Pool had the same mother, Maartje Jans de Waart? Do not you think very strange that the surname Veljepiek has disappeared from future documents?

Finally: In absence of more complementary information and documentation, with a few reliable proofs and a few coherent deductions, we must tie loose ends to be able to proceed in the search. Also the patronymic informality and, in some cases, the constant change of surnames was quite common at the time. But, again for me, it's more than clear that both Cornelis were the same person. Maybe due to indecision or some kind of convenience or preference, Cornelis used his mother's surname before taking his father's one. That is my theory and the evidence that I have to support that both were the same person.

Sorry Bregitte, maar Lijsbet Jans Spek was getrouwd met Jakob, niet met Cornelis.

En bij de dopen van de kinderen van Cornelis Dirksz en Maartje Jans Waart wordt de vader 4x Veljepiek genoemd (1743, 1744, 1748 en 1750) en 2x Pool (1753 en 1756). (FamilySearch pages 112, 117, 126, 130, 135, 140 of church records 1676-1811 (Kolhorn))

Overigens heb ik ook nog een doop van ene Gerrit Pool gevonden in 1759 te Kolhorn  ( FS Barsingerhorn dopen 1676-1811 p 145) met vader Cornelis Dirksz Pool en moeder Maartje Trappel. Gezien de naam van het kind vermoed ik dat deze Maartje een vader had die Gerrit heette. Over deze Maartje (Geriits?) Trappel kan ik tot nu toe verder niets vinden.

Volgens de verpondingen Kolhorn 1733 woonden Cornelis Jacobsz Veljepiek en Dirk Pool elk in de helft van het zelfde huis. Dat zijn dus zeer waarschijnlijk de vaders van respectievelijk Grietje Cornelis Veljepiek en Cornelis Dirksz Pool, die met elkaar huwden.

Waarom een zoon van Cornelis en Grietje zich Veljepiek zou noemen is mij ook een raadsel. Als ze niet konden schrijven kan het ook nog een (herhaalde) fout zijn van de predikant/scribent van de kerk. Vader Dirk wordt bij de doop van dochter Anna in 1717 Dirk Boos genoemd.

Er werden dus fouten gemaakt. Ook het ontbreken van trouw- en begraafboeken uit die periode maakt het er niet makkelijker op. Al met al ben ik geneigd om op dit moment Ariel Pool Crocco gelijk te geven.

I also received comments from my sister Yvonne Ruchti and putting two and two together, I have come to the conclusion that I was the one who was mistaken or perhaps a bit too hasty. In Kolhorn komt het regelmatig voor dat er gebruik werd gemaakt van de bijnaam of patroniem.

Maartje Trappel is dus gewoon een alias voor Maartje de Waart
