Quick update:

In the course of doing a sweep through numerous mentions of Engelbert Hoevel in ORA Borculo records (some are very tough to read due to scan quality and the Gelderland archives will not scan the original documents due to their fragile condition), I found a reference to his age, dated 6 April 1682. Engelbert gave his age as 57, so it appears Engelbert's year of birth was in the 1624/1625 period. It starts on scan 2238 and continues on 2239 (left side):

ORA Borculo, 47-48 6 4 1682 Eng., dr. Hoevel omtrent 57 jaren oud:

Scan 2238:

The 1624/1625 birthdate for Englebert makes sense, as his wife Richarda Marquerinck was baptized in 1625.

This also lines up with what appears to be a first mention in contemporaneous records of Engelbert Hoevels in a document, dated 14 April 1649 (he would have been 24 or 25 years of age):

ORAB 81 16v 17 14 4 1649 Engelbert Hoevel

Scan 456 (left and right sides):

I thought this might be of interest to other descendants of Engelbert Hoevel. No clues on his parents.

Thanks!

One more update:  it turns out there was an earlier reference to my ancestor, Engelbert Hoevel.  It was part of a case in 1650 in which, as part of the court document, an extract, dated 24 December 1648 mentioning Engelbert's name:

orab 237 24 12 1648 Engelbert Hoevel:

Steve,  I think I read in this deed that Engelbert is appointed court secretary and lawyer and procurator.

Thanks, Bas.  This is great to now know when Engelbert's service began.  According to indexes of the Borculo records, there are numerous references of mentions of Engelbert.  Over the past few weeks, I have attempted to cherry pick those records which show family relationships, mainly with his wife and her family, as well as Engelbert's children.

I really appreciate you pointing this out. It's significant life event for Engelbert.  Though I know others on this forum have struggled finding his parents, it's apparent Engelbert was a man of some importance.

P.S. So, the 1648 date is when he was appointed?  If so, he was about 23 years of age (based on a later deposition when Engelbert gave his age).

This is excellent.  Great finds.  I will have to get these downloaded.  This proves what's been said on this topic and I believe another thread on this topic mapped out Engelbert Hoevel's ancestors.  First, I will consult before asking for any additional help or suggestions.

My deepest gratitude.

Steve
