Profiel afbeelding

I am a great-great-grandson of Henriette (Hendrika?) Matthes - born Schouten - who should have been born in 1841 or on the first days of 1842. She married in 9.7.1862 in Buitenzorg Peter Adriaan Matthes who was later resident in Soerakarta.

After his premature death in autumn 1884, she sailed on 7.11.1884 with her 3 youngest children (including my great-grandmother, born 1873 in Anjer) on the "Prins Frederik" mailboat to Holland. She died 5.1.1920 in Holland aged 78 (so says the newspaper Familiebericht).

I do not know for sure that she was born in the Indies, but I did not find a fitting birth anouncement on the name of Schouten in the Dutch newspapers (the wonderful Delpher site) in 1841.

Strangely, Henriette's mother did post an anouncement on P.A.Matthes' death, signing "wed. H. Schouten-Saurbeek". But on the genealogy sites I did not find a fitting H. Saurbeek around 1800.

Could Henriette have been born in the Indies? Were both her parents' families - the Schoutens and the Saurbeeks living in the Indies?

Of Henriette's 8 children, I did find some details on #1, Hendrik, born 1863, #5, Hester, #6, my great-grandmother, and #7, Marius, who died at 2 years of age. But what were the names of the 3 boys, #2,#3,#4, all born in Manado on 13.5.1864, 6.2.1866, 1.4.1868? Did they stay in the Indies? And what was the name of the youngest girl, #8, born sometime in July 1877 in Surakarta?

Many thanks, Amos Boasson

In the Digitale Stamboom Den Haag you can find Hendrika Schouten, widow of Peter Adriaan Matthes.

She was born in Gouda 18-01-1841  and went to Hilversum 19-08-1907.

You can find a scan of her card via: http://denhaag.digitalestamboom.nl/%28S%28tlwelqjbyhfhr4hg0xggq2pw%29%29/search.aspx  Search in: Bevolkingsregister 1913-1939

In the Digitale Stamboom Den Haag you can also find:

Hendrik Justus Matthes. born Menado 15-04-1863

Hendrik Matthes born Menado 13-05-1864

Willem Christiaan Matthes born Menado 01-04-1868

and other persons with the surname Matthes.

Maybe the youngest child was Johanna Jacoba Wilhelmina born in Surakarta 03-07-1877, but her parents are not mentioned on her card.

On the website www.wiewaswie.nl I did a search for the name Schouten in combination with the name Saurbeek and Sauerbeek. Some records did turn up. Most records refer to Gouda.

So I searched in Gouda for a birth record of a Henriette/Hendrika/Hendrica Schouten. I found a birth record for a Hendrica Schouten who was born on the 18th of January 1841 in Gouda. The birth was registered on the 20th of January 1841. Her parents were Hendrik Schouten and Alida Sauerbeek. Could she be the person you are looking for?

I think that the “H” in “wed. H. Schouten-Saurbeek” refers to the first name of her husband and not to her own first name. I have seen it more often that widows sign an announcement with the initial of their late husband’s first name instead of the initial of their own first name. In this case the “H” could refer to “Hendrik”.

On www.wiewaswie.nl I also did a search for the death records of Hendrik Schouten and Alida Sauerbeek. Hendrik Schouten died on the 20th of November 1881 in Aarlanderveen in the province of Zuid-Holland, aged 82. Alida Johanna Sauerbeek, widow of Hendrik Schouten, died on the 16th of May 1898 in Alphen, Zuid-Holland, aged 88.

I also found the marriage of Hendrik Schouten and Alida. In the marriage record Alida is mentioned as Aleida Sourbeek. They married on the 8th of August 1827 in Gouda.

The death record of Alida Johanna Sauerbeek is not available on Familysearch.

Link to the marriage record of Hendrik Schouten and Aleida Sourbeek (record 55):

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11577-95083-40?cc=1576401&wc=9CHJ-SP6:108150401,113230901

And finally the link to the first page of the wedding supplements.

In the wedding supplements I found that Hendrik Schouten was born on the 23rd of February 1799 in Spaarndam. Aleida Sourbeek was born on the 23rd of May 1809 in Gouda.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything else for Hendrica Schouten.

Dear G. Karssenberg

Thank you so much for all your marvellous findings!

So do you think Teunis Lenderink was in 1736 Fenneken's first husband? And then she married Reijnt te Broeke / Broekeman and gave birth to Teune in 1751?

Are these details from the Laren archive?

Thanks again
