Greetings:

Six years ago (October 2016), I posted an inquiry seeking the origins of Jan Daemsz van Ruijsenburch who married Eva Hendricks Sluimer of Leiden.  According to my research, I found a marriage record for Jan and Eva in Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands on 12 July 1681.  According to the marriage registration, Jan and Eva were either born or living in Amersfoort.  Fortunately, I was able to find Eva's parents Hendrick Jacobszn SLUIMER and Martijntgen JANSDR (their marriage was recorded at Utrecht on 17 October 1654; https://hetutrechtsarchief.nl/collectie/609C5C45CF164642E0534701000A17FD).

As of this writing, I have not made any progress, so I would like re-post my inquiry in the hopes perhaps maybe someone who is familiar with these families located some information, whether it is from a church record or notarial deed. (I looked through the parish registers for Amersfoort and Utrecht, both NH and RK. I found no relevant entries in the NH registers and the RK registers started late)

For convenience's sake, I have reconstructed the family of Jan Daemsz van Ruijsenburch and Eva Hendricks Sluimer.  As mentioned before, this couple was from Amersfoort and Utrecht, respectively.  The couple relocated to Leiden.  I have been unable to find the burial record/registration for Jan and Eva in Leiden or surrounding municipalities.

However, here is a family group sheet for Jan and Eva, their children's baptisms with witnesses (excuse spelling errors if they are any).

Hopefully, I have provided enough information and clues for someone to follow.

Any and all assistance would be sincerely appreciated and welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

SPECIAL NOTE:  there are name variants for this family: van Ruijsenburch, van Ruijsenbergh, and van Rusenbergen.  There might be more that I have overlooked.

On November 6th, 1674 are getting married in Amersfoort Daem Daemsz Rustenberch, widower of Oetje Jans, and Gijsbertje Jans. He may either be a brother to Jan, or his father. May...

The name Daem, patronym Daems, Damen - I think - is synonymous to Daniël. At least in this context; Utrechts Archief:

Trouwinschrijving Daniel Ruijssenburg, van Bruidegom Amersfoort 06-02-1717
Doopinschrijving Daem Russenburg, van Vader Amersfoort 30-01-1718
Doopinschrijving Daniel Russenburg Vader Amersfoort 29-12-1719
Doopinschrijving Danielis Russenburg, van Vader Amersfoort 31-01-1724

The Patronym of this Daem / Daniel is Jan; he marries Mensje / Clementia Theunis van Emminck, who is alse the mother of these children.

What is a bit odd to me, is that among the baptisms in Leiden that you found there is no Daem or Daniel (yet?)

-Bart- - 15 dec 2022 - 18:54

Hi Bart:

Nice to hear from you again.  I am unsure if Wikipedia is reliable but this site seems to indicate Daem is Adam.  As you will see from the Leiden baptisms, there were two children named Adam (one died young).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daems

I found the 1674 marriage you located. And thanks for finding additional name spelling variants of the surname.

For grins, I found a baptismal entry but I am not going to say this is my ancestor:

Dopeling: Johannes Damasi
Aktedatum: 07-04-1652
Geboorteplaats: Achtersloot
Geboortedatum: 01-04-1652
Vader: Daem Jacobi
Moeder: Elisabeth Johannis
Getuige 1: Henrica Johannis
Gezindte: Rooms-katholiek
Toegangsnummer: Y046
Inventarisnummer: 610
Paginanummer: 139

A quick look at Google map shows the distance between Amersfoort and Achtersloot is roughly 40-41 km.

I shall look at Daem Daemsz Rustenberch more closely to determine if he was a) the father or b) the brother of my ancestor. Thanks for the catch.

Steve Barnhoorn 2 - 15 dec 2022 - 19:24

I am sorry, but I do not agree about the similarity between Daem and Daniel.
Vicars and priests knew their Bilble well, and Daem is equel to Adam, the first human being,
whilst Daniel was a minor biblical figure who lived about 500 B.C.

Baptisms Amersfoort 29-12-1719 mentions the name Daem indeed (once), but it was corrected by
striking part of the letter M into an N, making it Daen, which is short/common for Daniel.
(like Dan, in English)

I don't like to correct other forum members, and if I'm wrong I deeply apologize to -Bart- 🤔

Hi Jan:  Please feel free to correct me if I am in error on anything. It will not offend me in the slightest.  By the way, one of my eldest brothers is named Daniel.  :)

Regards,

Steve

Steve Barnhoorn 2 - 15 dec 2022 - 19:54

I stand corrected, did not check the originals - I should know better :-) Anyways, we can forget about Daniel, and start looking for Adam then.

2 marriages that are probably interesting:

Afbeeldingen zijn alleen zichtbaar als u bent ingelogd op het Stamboom Forum

Amsterdam, 25-09-1711 Adam Dame (from Leijden, must be the one baptized 29 Feb 1688) van Ruijsenbergh X Jannetje Dirks
After having at least a handfull of children baptized in Amsterdam, Johanna dies in January 1725
Amersfoort, 22-09-1725 Adam Damen van Ruijsenbergh (Widower Johanna Dirks Cortemans, from Amsterdam) X Theodora van Haeften
Children of Adam and Theodora are being baptized in Amsterdam thereafter
He dies in 1733; within a month a son Adam, funny there is no 'posthumus' indication that I can find.

Remarkable the next generation apparently still has ties and connections to Amersfoort

-Bart- - 15 dec 2022 - 20:31

Daem Daemsz who married Amersfoort 1674 has a son baptized there: 1676 Adam. Maybe an interesting deed, 18-05-1672 about a merchand Adam Daemen in Amsterdam. Of course, not sure at all if this is the same guy.

For arguments sake, a Jan with father Daem is baptized in 1654 (smack dab the year you guessed / estimated) in Oudewater:

He has got a sister Maria (which is NOT a very distinctive name):

These baptisms are NDG. The Jan we are looking for does have his children baptized RC, so probably this is not the right one.

[Edit:] Yes, I did notice the witnesses, that's why I posted this like I did....

-Bart- - 15 dec 2022 - 21:19 (laatst bijgewerkt 15 dec 2022 — 21:53 door auteur)

When I posted the baptisms, please note the witnesses.

1 M:           Jan VAN RUIJSSENBERG

Death Date:    bef 12 May 1724
Death Place:   Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands
Occupation:    Factoor

Again:  Not saying the record you found in 1654 at Ouderwater is the correct person, but at a minimum, we know Jan likely had a sibling named Maria.  One thing I have found in searching my father's Dutch lines, I have seen instances where my ancestors have changed religions (if that's the correct phrase to use here). Incidentally, I noticed Ouderwater is about 55 km from Amersfoort.  So your hunch might be correct we may not have the correct Jan from 1654.

When Johannes van Ruijsenberg marries Lidia, witness is Jacob Brant.
He married in Leiden Maria Dames van Ruijsenberg.
She also was from Amersfoort.

A sister Anna also marries in Leiden.

Jan Daems van Ruijssenburch had also a sister called Barbara.

She married as Barber Dame, from Amersfoort x Harmen (Hermanus) Hendrixsz (also Timmermans) on jul 13th 1669 in Leiden.

First, thanks for the wonderful replies.

By my count, it looks like Jan Daems van Ruijssenburch had siblings named Maria, Barbara, and Anna.  The key for Yours Truly is to find a church record or, in the absence of baptisms, a legal document that names all of the children as offspring of their parents.  The hunt is on.

Again, thanks for the responses.

Steve Barnhoorn 2 - 16 dec 2022 - 18:06 (laatst bijgewerkt 16 dec 2022 — 18:07 door auteur)

Right now, I feel like I'm at an impasse.  If anyone has suggestions on the next steps, I would sincerely welcome your thoughts.  For some unexplained reason, this family intrigues me.

Thanks in advance.

There is also a Daem Daemsz, of Amersfoort, living in the Santstraet, cloth worker, who marries in 1671 in Leiden, Heyltge Jans Coorevaer, from Gouda.

Witness for Daem is Harmen Hendricx, living in the Oranjegraft.
(I think, he is the same as the Harmen Hendricksz (Timmermans), living in the Oranjegraft who married Barbara Damen)

Anecdote: artist / painter Jacob Toornvliet (Jacobus Torenvliet, ca. 1640-1719) was a good friend of Jan Daemsz van Ruijsenburch & Eva Hendricks Sluimer. That becomes clear when reading the (1702, deed #24, scan #88 etc.) last will of Jan and Eva:

"the honourable Pieter de Pree, master painter, and Jacobus Toornvliet, master 'artpainter', their well known (acquainted) friends":

Pieter and Jacobus are appointed guardians. About Jacob:

Remarkable: both Jan ans Eva are signing the deed with a monogram.

Eva (at least the second 'letter'is an S:

Jan (Capital I or J with capital D):

Fwiw: a brother of Eva, Hendrik Hendriksz Sluijmer also lives in Leiden. He marries 13-04-1686 Marijtje Jacobs van Leeuwen. In 1687 Eva is witness to the baptism of their daughter Maria.

-Bart- - 18 dec 2022 - 16:09

So there are probably at least 5 brothers and sisters: Jan, Anna, Barbara, Mary and Daem. The all lived at some time in Leiden, coming from Amersfoort. They married in Leiden:

Barbara Damen x Harmen Hendricksz (Timmermans) (Leiden 13-07-1669)
Daem Daems x Heyltge Jans Coorevaar (Leiden 31-07-1671 &  Gouda 16-08-1671)
Jan Damen van Rusbergen x Eva Sleumers (Amersfoort 12-07-1681).
Noted: Jan parents had died before the wedding.
Marytje Damen van Russenbergh x Jacob Michielsen Brant (Leiden 09–11-1686)
Annetge Damen x Vincent Watervoort (Leiden 29-05-1688)

Daem Rustenberg, widower of Oetje Jans, married Gijsbertje Jans in Amersfoort on 06-11-1674.
Daem en Gijsbertje had a son:
Adam Daemsen, 11-09-1676 Amersfoort (RC) Witness: Basilia Bartholumis

Annetge Damen x Vincent Watervoort had children baptizes in Amersfoort: Daem (1693), Anna (1695), Hermannus (1697: witness Gijsbertje), Johannes & Hendricus (1701), Oeda (1703), Oetie (1704), Bettie (1706).

Registration Civilian Orphanage Amersfoort:
08-12-1679.
Annitgen Daemen, 12 years old, daughter of Daen Daems and Betje (Oetje?) Jans, presented by Henrick de Vuller, Claes Claesz. Brabander en Gijsbertje N.N., as stepmother.
Jan Daemsz, 11 years old, brother of Annitgen and Daem, son of Daen Daems and Betje (Oetje?) Jans, presented by Henrick de Vuller, Claes Claesz. Brabander en Gijsbertje N.N., as stepmother.

05-12-1682.
Daem Daems,7 years old, brother of Jan and Annitgen, son of Daem Daems and Gijsbertje N.N. He run away from the Orphanage on 21-7-1695.

They fit in very well, but the age doesn’t match. Maybe the Jan above is a Jan jr (a second son of Daem with the name of Jan and a younger brother of Jan sr). I think i saw a Jan Daems as a witness at the baptise of one of the children of Jan Daems Ruijssenberg at Leiden. In that case it fits very well.
