I’m researching Jan Heijendael (ca. 1615–before 14 December 1653), likely from Gelderland or Overijssel, Netherlands, and his wife Ermgarda van Crughten (ca. 1611–), married by 1639. Ermgarda remarried Evert van Huijssen after Jan’s death by 1655. I’m seeking Jan’s parents and need help confirming two possible daughters in their family.

Jan’s Parentage: Two unsourced claims exist:

I need primary records (e.g., baptisms, wills) to confirm Jan’s parents, likely in Gelderland or Overijssel archives.

Family Structure: Through a complex chain of deeds and multiple primary sources, I’ve independently verified that Jan and Ermgarda were the parents of five sons, listed below in approximate chronological order based on marriage dates or estimated birth years. The birth order and exact birth years are uncertain without baptisms. I’m struggling to confirm two possible daughters, Arnolda and Wendelina, but their close proximity (same region and time) suggests they’re likely siblings.

  • Peter Heijendael (ca. 1640–)
    • Married before 27 September 1682 to Margaretha Kreijvenger (ca. 1640–/1682).
    • Married 27 September 1682 in Randwijk to Bartje/Bartje/Bartina Vermeer (ca. 1650–), daughter of Roelof Vermeer (ca. 1625–/1665) and Clara Jelissen, baptised on 26 April 1633, daughter of Egbertus Jelissen and Bartie Boumans, Huissen Stad (RK) .
  • Willem Heijendael (ca. 1640–/1680)
    • Married 12 February 1665 in Hemmen to Claeske Jelissen (see above baptism).
Note: Claeske Jelissen is Bartje/Bartje/Bartina Vermeer’s mother.
  • Hendrick Heijendael (ca. 1650–/1676)
    • Married 25 June 1673 in Neder-Elten to Jenneken de Winter.
  • Jacob Heijendael (ca. 1655–)
    • Married to Geertruijd Bernts (date and location unknown).
  • Rijck Heijendael (ca. 1655–/1706)
    • Married (ca. Heteren) to Jacomina Dercksen (date unknown).

Possible Daughters (Unconfirmed):

  • Arnolda Heijendael (ca. 1645–/1683)
    • Married 8 October 1670 in Herwen to Derck van Huijssen
    • Married 21 January 1681 in Herwen to Sander Teeuwis Uijten Wardt (b. 1659).
  • Wendelina Heijendael (ca. 1650–/1686)
    • Married 14 July 1674 in Heteren to Peter Spronck
    • Married 8 September 1677 in Randwijk to Derck Lippis.

Requests for Help:

  • Can anyone provide primary records (e.g., baptisms, marriages, deeds) to confirm Jan Heijendael’s parentage or verify Arnolda and Wendelina as daughters? Likely locations include Randwijk, Hemmen, Herwen, Heteren, or Neder-Elten.
  • Are there specific Dutch archives (e.g., Gelders Archief, Regionaal Archief Rivierenland) or databases for 17th-century records in these areas? Tips for accessing them?
  • Does anyone have expertise on the Heijendael family or variants (e.g., Heyendael, Heidendal) in Gelderland/Overijssel?
  • I’ve compiled a 20-page report with my findings, but I hesitate to post it here—it’d be longer than a Dutch winter! LOL. If you’re interested, contact me privately, and I’m happy to share the full details.

Thank you for any records, leads, or advice! I’d love to nail down Jan’s parents and confirm Arnolda and Wendelina’s place in this family.

Regards, Steve

Ermgarda van Cruchten x 1) Johan Heyendael, probably a son of Christoffel Heyendael from Doesburg.

@Bas: Based on what document?  I already copied and pasted the link, but the author provides no source to back up his statement.

I don’t know Steve. It’s only a possible track at this point.

It says that: The protocols of the Heteren Objection, the Court Signs of Elst and the Judicial Archives of the Cleef Enclaves, all at the National Archives in Arnhem, were mainly consulted.

(III.) Hendrick van Cruchten (the brother of Ermgarda van Cruchten x Jan van Heyendael) was married with Wendelina Heyendael. She was a sister of Jan van Heyendael. This Hendrick van Cruchten was judge and governor of the lordship of Homoet.

In this document in 1651 (the late) Weindel Heyendael is mentioned as the sister of Jan.

Great finds! At least I know what Jan did for a living.  Thanks for the find.  I'll follow up on your tip, Bas.

Again, I deeply appreciate what you posted.

Kindest regards,

Steve

@Bas: If you happen to find anything else, please feel free to post. But I'll definitely will do my part and don't expect others to take their valuable time of their lives for me.

Again, I deeply appreciate the help and useful insights and research tips.

Kind regards,

Steve

Thanks for the image of the page from the book. One thing I need help with are the abbreviations in the text.  Something tells me the answer is in what appears to be a specific register.  If there's anyway to pinpoint that register, that would be great.  The names in the family appear to have naming patterns. Hendrick stands out

@Bas: As thumbed through the book, I didn't see Jan mentioned as a son of Christoffel Heijdendaal and Margret. Maybe the author didn't realize it at the time and perhaps it might have been a later discovery.  Sorry to be technical. I'm away from home, so I'm at a little disadvantage using my mobile phone.

The abbreviations in the text will have to be explored further. Again, the work looks credible and I am very grateful for your kind help.

Names Hendrick and the female name Wendel Baerken, wife of Dirk Heijdendaal (parents of Christoffel) were used with respect to Jan Heijdendaal's sister and daughter Wendelina. A unique name to me as I haven't seen that particular first name in my research.

Hopefully, some official documents as you kindly posted (the scans concerning Jan) will surface.

In the meantime, my sincerest gratitude for the help.

Regards, Steve

@Bas:

I’ve reviewed your posts about Jan (Johan) Heijendael and the Heijendael family. De Navorscher, volume 59, 1910, page 492, outlines the earlier generations of the family. However, unless I overlooked something, the author provides no sources. Admittedly, source citation standards in 1910 were far less rigorous than today’s. As I mentioned previously, the names Wendel and Wendelina seem distinctive in this family. Thanks to your help, we now know from the Elst records you located that Jan Heijendael had a sister named Wendelina. Thank you for that.

Returning to De Navorscher, while the family is well-mapped, the lack of sources is a notable gap. I can see where Christoffel Heijendael fits into the lineage, but only three children are accounted for. Based on the De familie Van Cruchten report and your translation, it’s suggested that Johan Heijendael was “probably” a son of Christoffel Heijendael from Doesburg. This connection feels vague and speculative, not definitive. The same report notes that “the protocols of the Heteren Objection, the Court Signs of Elst, and the Judicial Archives of the Cleef Enclaves, all at the National Archives in Arnhem, were mainly consulted.” It’s possible these records may also refer to the Cruchten family, as they were documented in these sources alongside Jan Heijendael. This means I’ll need to thoroughly search the Doesburg court records for Heijendael references, which will be a significant undertaking.

Thank you for your generous assistance in the meantime.

Regards,

Steve
