Hello fellow Stamboom researchers,

I'm piecing together the family of Jan Claesz and Niesje Janse from Overveen, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, based on Roman Catholic (RK) records. All known events took place in Overveen. Here's what I have so far from baptismal and marriage entries:

  • Marriage: Jan Claesz and Niesje Janse were married on 13 July 1710. Witnesses: Anna Rijse and Sijntje Huibers. (Estimated birth years: Jan c.1685, Niesje c.1688 – based on typical marriage age of 23–27 for first marriages in 18th-c. Noord-Holland RK communities.)

Their known children (all baptized in Overveen RK):

Claas: Baptized 10 April 1711. Witnesses: Hendrick Janse, Thijs Augustus.
Helena: Baptized 10 April 1711. Witnesses: Jan Janse and Maritje Claas.
Jannitje: Baptized 26 November 1712. Witnesses: Jannitje Claes and Maerten Jans.
Willem: Baptized 19 April 1716. Witnesses: Willem Lourisse and Catharijn.
Geertruij: Baptized 23 November 1717. Witnesses: Frans Hendrix and Aldegondis Hendrix.
Hendrickje: Baptized 10 December 1719. Witnesses: Claas Jansen and Stijntje Jans.
Maerten: Baptized 11 November 1721. Witnesses: Jan Janse and Hendrickje Meus.

Some online genealogy sites (e.g., secondary trees on Geneanet, or MyHeritage) attribute the surnames "van Hest" to Jan and "Verkuyle" to Niesje, suggesting Jan Claesz van Hest and Niesje Janse Verkuyle. However, I've been unable to locate any primary source documents (e.g., from WieWasWie, OpenArch, Noord-Hollands Archief, or digitized RK registers) to verify this. The attribution may stem from patronymic clustering or unconfirmed links to families in nearby Heemstede or Haarlem.

What I'm Seeking:

  • Parents' Names: Baptismal records or other primary sources identifying the parents of Jan Claesz (c.1685) and Niesje Janse (c.1688). Likely baptized in Overveen, Bloemendaal, Santpoort, or Haarlem RK parishes.
  • Burial Records: Death/burial details for Jan and Niesje, ideally post-1721 (after Maerten’s birth). No matches yet in Overveen RK burial indices—possibly in Haarlem St. Joseph or Santpoort?

Any leads would be invaluable. Happy to share my indexed transcriptions or scans in return!

Many thanks in advance—looking forward to your insights.

Regards,

Steve

Hello Steve,

Use Transkribus and the first hit for the search of Verkuijle confirms their last names:
https://app.transkribus.org/nld/sites/noord-hollandsarchief/search?searchType=fulltext&term=verkuijle&f=1&mode=all_words&index=0

I am sure there is much more to find there.

01-09-1746 Nieje Janse Verkuijle, widow of Jan Claasz. van Hes lives in Overveen and is benificiary of her daughter Helena Janse van Hes married to Jacob Faasen (again the name Faas, see your other question) if Helena dies without issue.

Aart Verkuijle seems to be an important person who appears in several notary records. I also read about a debt in 's-Hertogenbosch. This may be one of the Brabant links I was writing about earlier.

Hi everyone,

After digging back into the Catholic parish register of the “Statie St. Agatha” (Zandvoort, also covering Overveen and Bloemendaal), Noord-Hollands Archief toegang 285, inv. nr. 22 (baptisms, marriages & burials 1682-1697 + burials continuing to 1781), I found several entries that I believe belong to the Verkuijl(e) / Verkuile, Nisje, Jans and related families from the Overveen area. I’d appreciate your thoughts and any additional information you might have!

Strong matches:

Possible / uncertain matches:

Bonus from FamilySearch (same parish):

At the very least, the 1725 Faas Nisje and the various Aert/Aart Verkuijl entries seem solid. I’m less certain about the others and would really appreciate any insights, corrections, or further connections you might see. In addition, so far I haven't found any clues that would make Niesje Jans Verkuijl and Aert Jansz van Verkuijl as siblings. The only thing in common is the Verkuijl name and similar patronymic.

Thanks in advance for any additional help.

Regards,

Steve

P.S. Hope the links work.

Notary deed in Haarlem, dated 30 August 1736, where Aert Verkuijl (or variant spellings) deposed his age as 48, suggesting a possible birth year of 1687/1688.

Update:  I was able to confirm that the burial record of Jan Clasz, dated 15? April 1742, was, in fact, the same man as Jan Claas van Haast, mentioned here in a Testament by his widow, dated 30 March 1749, stating they were from "wonende in de Rampenlaan onder Tetterode, Aalbertsberg en Vogelenzang." It would appear this document was drawn just before Niesje's passing the following year.
