Hello. The baptism record of Teuntje van Stein (N.H., Acquoij, Gelderland), 11 September 1785, contains a side note, apparently about a different Teuntje van Stein born in Leerdam. I cannot read all of these words, and what I do read I do not understand. Can someone please help me read and understand what this note means?
this daughter Teuntje has passed away, a second daughter Teuntje was born in Leerdam. An indemnity cert was issued for the latter child on 18.03.1781 as confirmed by the father on 02.09.1792
One required a deed of indemnity to be able to settle in a new city. A deed of indemnity was an official declaration by the parish or court of the place of origin/birth of new residents stating that the parish/court would make any necessary contribution towards the cost of living for the person in case he/she would fall to poverty. Thus, the new place of residence would not need to be responsible to cover these costs.
The requirement was only waivered if a city needed an influx of workers, as was the case in e.g. Amsterdam.
