I am a great-great-grandson of Henriette (Hendrika?) Matthes - born Schouten - who should have been born in 1841 or on the first days of 1842. She married in 9.7.1862 in Buitenzorg Peter Adriaan Matthes who was later resident in Soerakarta.
After his premature death in autumn 1884, she sailed on 7.11.1884 with her 3 youngest children (including my great-grandmother, born 1873 in Anjer) on the "Prins Frederik" mailboat to Holland. She died 5.1.1920 in Holland aged 78 (so says the newspaper Familiebericht).
I do not know for sure that she was born in the Indies, but I did not find a fitting birth anouncement on the name of Schouten in the Dutch newspapers (the wonderful Delpher site) in 1841.
Strangely, Henriette's mother did post an anouncement on P.A.Matthes' death, signing "wed. H. Schouten-Saurbeek". But on the genealogy sites I did not find a fitting H. Saurbeek around 1800.
Could Henriette have been born in the Indies? Were both her parents' families - the Schoutens and the Saurbeeks living in the Indies?
Of Henriette's 8 children, I did find some details on #1, Hendrik, born 1863, #5, Hester, #6, my great-grandmother, and #7, Marius, who died at 2 years of age. But what were the names of the 3 boys, #2,#3,#4, all born in Manado on 13.5.1864, 6.2.1866, 1.4.1868? Did they stay in the Indies? And what was the name of the youngest girl, #8, born sometime in July 1877 in Surakarta?
Many thanks, Amos Boasson
