To be sure you have to look at the official documents (marriage contract, birth certificate) available on film of FS as explained earlier.

If Geert Geertsema is her father than the militairy information gives you his parents and the name of his wife (as confirmation).

"Marie Geertsema was born 1888"

without any official document also 1886 can be correct. (also there is some variation in the place where she was born: Batavia or Medan)

@Lydia Olsen: It is indeed strange that Maria indicated in her application for remigration that she was born 21-10-1888 n Medan,  but according to Regerings Almanak no birth of  Marie or Maria Geertsema was recorded in 1888 in Medan.

Here is  page 309 of Regerings Almanak 1892 where  the birth of Maria Geertsema in 1886 in Batavia is recorded:

                                                                           But if you prefer to keep it in 1888, feel free to do so...

May be the marriage certificate can be given the answer. I believe 1886 in Medan will be correct.

The marriage record (Civil Registry  Batavia, marriage register 1908, entry nr. 110) shows the following:

Maria Geertsema, born Deli, 21  years old, living in Batavia, daughter of the native woman Oeriep, deceased, and recognised by Geert Geertsema, 'schout bij de politie' [chief of police] in Batavia, living in Batavia.

We kunnen er dus van uitgaan dat Maria Geertsema, geboren 21-10-1886, een dochter is van Geert Geertsema en ene Oeriep. Geerts vrouw Geertruida Elisabeth Bell (met wie hij in 1891 trouwde) is dus niet de moeder van Maria.

Interesting comments about Marie. How was the conclusion reached that Geert Geertsema was Marie's father as ourthoughts are that he was too old and there were a number of Geertsema's around.

He recognized Maria. This of course doesn't give the absolute certainty that he is also the father, but he was certainly not too old: he was born in 1861 and was therefore 25 years old at the time of Maria's birth.
