I am looking for details about Dirk Schouten who was born around 1924. He signed on to several ships. SS Tawali in 1945 and also the SS Nelly. I am hoping someone might have information which will help me either find him, details about him or maybe family. All I know is that in 1953 he was 28 years of age and that he was born in Holland.
Where was he in 1953? Maybe that triggers some memories for people.
Was he a passenger or labourer on these ships? Which country did he go to (US - Australia - other?).
Are you sure you cannot tell us more, that will help us. The name Schouten is rather common in Holland and his first name Dirk is usually how he was called. His birthname could well be different, for instance Theodorus.
So if you have more details, tell us!
Een oudere oproep uit 2008 :
I am trying to locate Dirk Schouten who was a crew memeber on the ship "Nelly" when it sailed to Australia in 1952/53. He was 28 years of age in 1952. I have no other details other than he was born in the Netherlands. I would like to find him as he knew my mother and according to her am his daughter. I would like to meet my father and any other siblings I may have.
Waarschijnlijk gaat het om Australië. Zie hier.
Thank you for your replies...as I don't speak Dutch it will take me a little while to translate. I will put up all the information I have.
the reactions are: - In 2008 the same question was asked, maybe also by you;
- somebody found that the emigration was for Australia ;
- that Dirk was a crewmember of the MS "Nelly", that ship was hired by the dutch government to bring the emigrants to Australia;
- that this ship only went once to Australia in july 1952;
- that Dirk was probably the father of the person who asked the same question in 2008;
Hope this helps you a little bit. It looks like it that with only a name that maybe isn't his birthname and a probable birthyear (which is not released yet by the dutch government (only after 100 years because of privacy) it will be impossible to find him in the Netherlands.
Lots of succes Marian
Hello. Yes that was my question several years ago. I have a crew list of thr SS Nelly when my mother came to Australia from Germany in 1953. The Australian archives had the crew list. There is not much documentation about this trip. Dirk Schouten was on this crew list and it shows he was 28. His job listed as AB and that he was from Rotterdam.
Thank you..have those details.
Irene,
Does the 1953 passenger list say who was behind the voyage? Was it the German government or a private comapany as they might still have some more hiring information (eg contact addresses) stored away somewhere ... ?
Sylvia
P.S. I noticed that he was listed as an able seaman. Was there a specific reason that he was interacting with passengers (I know that I'm clutching at straws here).
P.S. 2 - I have already understood that the company was The Caribbean land and shipping corp and that the February 1953 arrival was the last voyage before a major refit. That could explain why Dirk is not listed on later crew lists as he might have moved on to another ship or could have settled for a different job.
On the website of the city archive Rotterdam I found two possible entries for Dirk:
Dirk Nicolaas Schouten, born 1924 in Rotterdam. Click here.
Dirk Theodorus Schouten, born 1927 in Rotterdam. Click here.
Unfortunately their profession is not listed, so I don't know if one of these two gentlemen is the Dirk you are looking for.
Thank you for the information..?
