I found two documents recording the birth of Jan Medema. I would like to have them translated. I am also having trouble finding information on his mother, Anje Medema. I appreciate and help you can provide.

Antje Meedema zal wel op 24.8.1826 in 't Zandt geboren zijn als dochter van Jogchum Jans Meedema, schipper, 52 jaar, en Grietje Jacobs Dijk.
The first document is his birth certificate. His birth registration was done by Trientje Jogchums Medema, she was 30 years old. Jans' mother was Antje Medema. Jan was born in 't Zand on February 26, 1854. In the margin: Jans' mother Antje Medema said that Jan is her son on March 17, 1876 and that's what the second document is about. In this second document you can read that Antje is 49 years old [so born in 1826/1827].
here: Zoeken op naam (allegroningers.nl) birth certificate of Antje Meedema. She is born on August 24, 1826 in 't Zandt. Her parents are Joghum Jans Meedema (skipper, 52 years old) and Grietje Jacobs Dijk.
Antje also gave birth to a son Jan on December 23, 1850 in 't Zandt. This son died on February 7, 1851.
Brief clarification:
In the margin: Jans' mother Antje Medema said that Jan is her son on March 17, 1876 and that's what the second document is about. In this second document you can read that Antje is 49 years old [so born in 1826/1827].
She had to state this -- officially -- before a legal connection between mother and child could be instituted. Everybody can register a birth (and occasionally they have to... the mother being indisposed during the first days after the birth, and a father not always available). So at one time or another, the mother of a child born out of wedlock has to make a declaration to this effect, or she won't be able to give her consent to the child's marriage, nor will he/she inherit anything from her.
It is quite clear that Doeke was the son of Antje's new husband (born 6 weeks before the wedding, and promptly legitimized). It is just as clear that Jan wasn't: he was born long before the stepfather entered the picture and he wasn't legitimized.
So far, I haven't seen any reference to the biological father anywhere. Jan's birth was registered by a woman who was clearly Antje's sister.
Antje and Jakob had another child, named Grietje, born on August 15, 1866 in Surhuisterveen. The birth registration of Grietje was on September 12, 1895 (after judgment by the district court in Leeuwarden), because the parents had forgotten to register the birth in 1866. Zoeken (allefriezen.nl) In 1895 Grietje's father Jacob was still alive, her mother Antje wasn't.
Jochum Jans Medema, geboren in Uithuizermeeden, weduwnaar van Aaltje Bartelds, huwt op 28.11.1819 in 't Zandt met Grietje Jacobs Dijk, geboren in 't Zandt, weduwe van Hinderk Willems.
That district (Surhuisterveen and its environs) was well-known for the disregard in which the inhabitants held all civil or religious registration! There may even have been other children of Jakob and Antje which weren't registered at all. Grietje had to be entered afterwards, because she survived and wanted to get on with her life (most probably because she wanted to get married).
Antje Medema died on July 8, 1882 in ter Apel.
Jakob Nijp remarried on November 27, 1882 in Vlagtwedde to Hillechien Onrust.
Jakob Nijp died on August 21, 1908 in Stadskanaal.
Thank you for your help. You have provided more details than I could ever have expected. I look forward to more research into my family.
Thank you,
Tim Medema
