Hi,

May I ask for some help transcribing patient notes for Wilhelmus Ludovicus Franciscus Grimberg (1818) during his time at Meerenberg between 1871-1872? I can read most of the basic information (name, occupation, location etc.) but I really struggle with the doctor's notes, particularly on page 2 below. It seems he stayed about a year and was discharged, though I know he died there in 1873, so maybe there are more notes later on?

Thank you very much!

Ciska, here are the patient notes, as far as I could read them. i am sure, some sentences need correcting.

Institution Meerenberg

Name: Wilhelmus LM Grimberg

Conclusion of the daily observations as per art. 14 . 2-29  of June 1871

Numbers 1-7

Busy, lively ,excited, overrated to himself, complete unaware of his condition. restless at night, carrying his bedding, knocking, very confused, uncontrolable, threatening sometimes to killing [*1]. Strong lungs?, followed by what looks like a diagnosis in latin.

Nr 13-19

Gradually after the "Congentie confertis??" deminished, he quiet down and relaxed. Still overrated himself, excessive wellbeing, imagining rich and happy.Geen [frural?] symptoms noticible, the pupils are equal, quiet at night, repeated attempts to flee, desire to work.

*1. Not sure if there is stated:  doden [to kill] or daden [actions]

Report at the end of  four weeks, as per art. 14

Above mentioned  [lijden?, suffering] has during the four weeks of his stay in the institution shown clear signs of insaneness in the form of mania with cheerfullness. He was occupied, movable, difficult and uncontrolable. restless during the night, leaving his bed, ripping his cloths. Charishing all sort of maniac images. had an exaggerated feeling of wellbeing, imagening to be rich and happy. The extension of his stay will be checked during the first test year or much shorter as his condition will show.

My transcription of the second page. The rest for somebody else:

2 Druk, levendig, opgewonden, overschatting van zich-
3 zelven, totaal onbewustzijn van toestand - 's nachts
4 onrustig met beddegoed sjouwen, kloppen, zeer
5 verward, verwart personen, onhandelbaar,
6 dreigen soms tot daden overgaan, sterke Conges-
7 tio Capitis inf. . .
8   Dezelfden toestand

geacht.

Initial diagnosis (the first form):

dementia paralytica.

Petra - 20 apr 2026 - 09:19

Here the translation of Michael's transcription.

2 Busy, lively, excited, overestimation of himself,
3 completely unaware of his condition — restless at night,
4 dragging bedding around, banging, very
5 confused, confuses persons, unmanageable,
6 sometimes threatening to act on his threats, strong conges-
7 tion of the head (Congestio Capitis)…
8 The same condition.

13 Gradually, as the congestion of the head diminished, he became calmer
14 and more composed…
15 …of himself. Exaggerated sense of well-being,
16 imagines himself rich and happy — no … symptoms
17 observable; pupils equal. Quiet at night.
18 Repeated attempts to escape, aversion
19 to work. Severe condition.

The above-mentioned illness, during the four
weeks of his stay in the institution, showed clear
signs of insanity in the form of mania with elation.
He was busy, restless, troublesome, and unmanageable,
restless at night, left his bed, tore his clothes,
etc. Moreover, he entertained all kinds of delusions,
had an exaggerated sense of well-being,
and imagined himself rich and happy. The extension
of his stay here is considered useful and necessary
for an initial trial period of one year, or for a shorter
time if his condition proves to require it.

Many thanks for the detailed transcription translation, and also for the link to the second entry in 1873!

Apologies about the incorrect link.
