BRINKMAN is a pioneering woman in architecture in South Africa.
Was born in Pretoria, of Dutch immigrant parents. She studied architecture from 1927 at the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Architecture in March 1932, being of the early women to graduate in South Africa as a qualified architect. Here Norman EATON, it is reputed, made a strong impression on her. She was also influenced by the MARTIENSSEN-led Transvaal Group. Her very first commission was for the Mill Park Bowling Club, which encompassed the International Style principles.
Upon her marriage to JF BRINKMAN, she, together with her husband, in 1935 joined her father Henk SIEMERINK in practice, thereafter styled SIEMERINK & BRINKMAN.
She became in time responsible for all the designs and sketch plans in the office. She and her husband made two trips abroad, one to Europe in 1939 and another to the South Americas in 1953, both of which proved immensely influential on her design thinking, hence the direction and output of the practice.
In 1959 she is recorded as being of the partnership SIEMERINK, BRINKMAN and VAN ROOYEN of address Reserve Chambers,19 Donkin Street, Port Elizabeth. By 1969 she is still recorded there, the partnership styled BRINKMAN, VAN ROOYEN and BROWNE.
After the retirement of her father she became a principal in the firm which eventually became BRINKMAN, VAN ROOYEN, BROWNE & SUTTON. Here she spent more time also preparing the project specifications (See Brinkman, B. The early work of Gertruida Brinkman. Unpublished essay on the work of his mother, 20 & later written communications). The practice, with both her son Bruce and grandson Bryan as partners, still exists (2020).
