Hi:

As you can you see, I am looking for the parentage of Sijmon Brosius who married Guurtje Cornelis on 1 February 1733 in Nieuwe Niedorp.

They were the parents of the following children at Nieuwe Niedorp (RK):

Elisabeth, dopen 16 April 1734 (Witness: Neeltje Brosius Oude Niedorp)
Adriana, dopen 8 May 1735 (Witness: Maartje Cornelis in't Velt)
Margarita, dopen 5 November 1736 (Witness: Lijsbeth Jans Sijbekarspel)
Ambrosius, dopen 16 February 1738 (Witness: Neeltje Brosius t Veld)
Cornelis, dopen 22 November 1739 (Witness: Maartje Cornelis t Veld)
Joannes, dopen 14 October 1741 (Witness: Rens Cornelisz Sijbekarspel)
Joannes, dopen 26 December 1743 (Witness: Anna Jans Westermoerbeek)
Maria, dopen 14 December 1745 (Witness: Anna Jans Westermoerbeek ()

Possible clues:

First: According to the 1733 Verponding of Oude Niedorp, there is one interesting entry:

"'t Huijs van Wed. Broes Simontsz of wel armevvogden, wont on niet beoond"

Second: Possibly this could be the mother of Sijmon Brosiuis.  Her husband's name here is "Broes Simontsz."  In reviewing the RK church baptisms for Nieuwe Niedorp, there is an entry for Ambrosius, son of Sijmen Brosius and Neel Sijberts. This child, who was baptized on 19 January 1672, is a good possible candidate for the father of Sijmon Brosius who married Guurtje Cornelis on 1 February 1733 in Nieuwe Niedorp.  Incidentally, Sijmon named one of his sons Ambrosius.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a marriage record for one Ambrosius, Brosius or Broes Sijmonsz in the vicinity of Nieuwe Niedorp or Oude Niedorp. Nor could I locate a baptism or legal document in the Notarial Archives explicitly stating the parentage of Sijmon Brosius (possibly born between 1700-1710?)  Nor have I uncovered the identity of the name of the widow of Broes Simontsz.

If anyone can assist me, I would appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance.

An additional clue: One of the witnesses at the baptism of Sijmon and Guurtje's children is Neeltje Brosius. This will probably be a sister of Sijmon. Sijmon's possible grandparents are called Sijmon and Neel. So Neeltje may have been named after her grandmother.

I suggest to have a look in the judicial archives. No indexes, so quite a bit of reading involved, but well worth the effort, I expect.

@Anneke 12:  Very good catch on Neeltje Brosius being named after her presumed grandmother Neel.  It makes sense.

@JP Ouweltjes:  Thank you for posting the link to the Judicial Archives.  I'll give it my best shot in scrolling through them.  I really appreciate the pointer.  If you can think of other sources, please let me know.  I didn't find any type of taxation lists. Perhaps I overlooked them. My purpose is to get an idea when Sijmon Brosius who married Guurtje Cornelis may have appeared.  I looked up the begraven imposts, and could not locate anything relating to this family.

Regards,

Steve

I suspect that this is the - RC - marriage of his supposed sister Neeltje Brosius on january 6th, 1732 in Nieuwe Niedorp. I cannot interpret everything...but I suspect her last name here is "Zijdewint"

Concerning witnesses "in facie Ecclesia" means in front of the church, so with the whole church as witnesses. But maybe more witnesses are to be found with these baptisms?

The witness Jan Brosius will also be related (brother?) to Sijmon and Neeltje. Jan is married to Guurtje Willems, also one of the witnesses.

This is looking for last name *dewin* in Nieuwe Niedorp. Apparently a seamless fit:

So I think there is proof that Sijmen Brosius = alias Sijmen Zijdewint, and Jan Brosius = alias Jan Zijdewint, like Neeltje Brosius = alias Neeltje Zijdewint.

I agree on your points.  Another bird's eye view, this time of Jan's family:

Jan Broosz  Guurtje Willems  huwelijk 03-05-1739 Nieuwe Niedorp RK
Trijntje  Jan Broosz  Guurtje Willems    dopen  10-02-1740 Nieuwe Niedorp   RK  Witness: Treijntje Willems
Simon  Jan Broosz  Guurtje Willems    dopen   21-05-1741 Nieuwe Niedorp  RK Witness: Neeltje Brosius
Trijntje  Jan Broosz  Guurtje Willems   dopen   20-02-1743 Nieuwe Niedorp   RK Witness: Treijntje Willems

At the moment, it looks like three children of the widow of Broes Simontsz who appeared in the 1733 Verponding list have been initially identified, child order loosely based on marriage dates:

Pieter Jansz and Neeltje Broos huwelijk 06-01-1732
Simon Broosz en Guurtje Cornelis huwelijk 01-02-1733
Jan Broosz en Guurtje Willems huwelijk 03-05-1739

One thing I have noticed with most of the records (DTB, Notarial, etc.,) in Nieuwe Niedorp is the time gaps. Unsure what happened. This family is going to be a challenge. Again, my thanks for your helpful insights.

Steve Barnhoorn 2 - 18 apr 2024 - 05:47

Hello Steve,

You might send an e-mail to Regionaal Archief Alkmaar and ask for an explanation of the documentation gaps.
It may be just coincidence, but maybe a fire was the cause? At first glance I could not find any reference to a disaster hitting Niedorp, but I didn't spend a lot of time on it either.

For completeness I post the topography here. Which makes very clear that the toponyms may - or may not - be developing into family names:

Hi Steve. There is a huge gap in the RK baptism books until 1730 it seems, hence you cannot find the baptisms.

B Volger - 18 apr 2024 - 11:48

Thanks, Bart for the map. On a whim, I may check the DTB registers for the areas you circled in red.

Update: many of the RK records in those areas have similar "gap" issues.  Guess it's back to scrolling through the Notarial and Judicial Records.  Not much of a choice.

Again, I appreciate everyone's assistance and helpful insights.

In the meantime, in Oude Niedorp found this burial entry for a daughter of Broos Sijmonsz named, Anna.  It looks like 18 September 1708? (Scan 6 - top left side)

Hi Steve, good finds!

- Did son Jan pass in Zijdewind? "overleden op de Zijdew:"

Afbeeldingen zijn alleen zichtbaar als u bent ingelogd op het Stamboom Forum

- Broos himself passed March 25th 1717; same location, I am almost sure

"Den 25 maert heeft Dirk Jansz aengevinge gedaen vant lijk van Broos Simonsz overleden opde Zeijdwt.[?] pro deo

[Edit:] I guess we are looking at a toponymic "in the making"; a toponym developing into a last name.

- Broos Simonsz living and dying at Zijdewint (1708, 1717)
- Neeltje Broos being named(?!) Zijdewint at her marriage (1732)
- Neeltjes nephews and nieces (children of Sÿmon and Jan) being called Zijdewint (from 1767)

I think this can/may/must also be viewed as 'proof' that Broos Simonsz is the father of Neeltje, Symon and Jan. Not in so many words, but think about the chances /likelyhood /odds of another Broos with a fitting patronym like Sÿmons living is a small village like Zijdewint and in the same period. Close to zero. So not 100% waterproof, but it is getting close to that in my opinion.

-Bart- - 19 apr 2024 - 09:14 (laatst bijgewerkt 19 apr 2024 — 09:45 door auteur)

Hi Bart:

Tentatively, I would have to agree that Broos Simonsz is the father of Neeltje, Symon and Jan, especially, as you aptly put it, "likelihood / odds of another Broos with a fitting patronym like Sÿmons living is a small village like Zijdewint and in the same period. Close to zero."

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anything in the Notarial or Judicial Archives around the time of Broos Simonsz's begraven that would shed further light on him, wife, and family.

By the way, is Broos short for Ambrosius?  I have seen patronymics with Brosius as well.

Steve Barnhoorn 2 - 19 apr 2024 - 15:20

P.S. Loosely based on the begraven and marriage records, it appears Broos Simonsz was the father of 5 children (3 grew to adulthood, 2 died young).
