Ik ben op zoek naar nazaten van Jan Speelman, geb. 1866 Gasselterboerveen en Jan Speelman geb. 1908 Exloërmond. (oom en neef) Beiden zijn geëmigreerd naar Noord-Amerika, Hosters Iwoa. De oudste Jan in 1893 en de jongste in 1939. Wie kan mij vertellen waar ik kan gaan zoeken? Alvast bedankt Ina

I am looking what happened to the brother of my grandfather JAN SPEELMAN. My grandfather's name is Hendrik Speelman. Jan was born in Gasselterboerveen, (Gasselte), Drenthe, the Netherlands on 19 October 1866. His father was Jacob Speelman, his mother Hindrikien Pepping. Jan Speelman left the Netherlands by the boat "Veendam" from Rotterdam on 7 feb. 1893 and arrived in America a few weeks later.
The Genealogy page of the province of Drenthe mentions that he settled in Hospers, Iowa. But in Ancestry-com I also found a Jan Speelman in Lynn, Sioux, Iowa. I would be very interested to know what happened to him in America, whether he got married, children, where and when he died and whether there are still descendants of him.
I write in English as I suppose Dutch is not widely spoken/understood anymore?

I have looked for him in the United States 1900 and 1910 Census and he and family are Not listed anywhere in the US census of those years. I did find him in the 1920 US cenus. He and family are in Sioux Center, Sioux county, Iowa.
Series: T625 Roll: 514 Page: 221a and 221
John Speelman age 53 b. Holland
Nettie Speelman age 38 b. Holland
Henrietta age 17 b. Iowa
Marie J. age 16 b. Iowa
---tie (can't read first letters) age 14 b. Iowa
Jeannette age 9 b. Iowa
I have also searched the Sioux county web site and there is no mention of the name Speelman in births, marriage or death or cemetery records. Also searched the Social Security records and not there either. Note: Farmers were not covered by Soc. Sec. until late 40's early 50's.
I can send you copies of the cenus records as .pdf files if you have the Adobe Acrobat program. Let me know if you want these copies.

I found out from Mrs Wilma van de Berg (Sioux Genealogy) that his wife's maiden name is Jeanetta Maria van WOUDENBERG (van is often omitted) and I saw on Ellis Island website that her parents also emigrated but much later namely in 1914 (Henry and Maria) and they went to Rock Valley, Iowa.
I also saw a junior Henri van Woudenberg (with or without the Van) that lived in Sioux City in 1920, I think it is her brother.
I am now looking at the 1930 census and hope to get a little further.
I really appreciate all the work you did for me.
Are you of Dutch descent as well?
If yes, I shall gladly be doing something for you, translating Dutch into English or whatever..

Jan/John Speelman, geboren 19.01.1866 Gasselterboerveen (Drente), gehuwd 25.09.1901 Rock Valley (USA) met Maria Jeanette van Woudenberg, dochter van Hendrikus van Woudenberg ( zoon van Hendrik van Woudenberg en Gijsbertje Vossekluil/Voskuilen/Voskuil), en Maria Jenetta Cator. Hij is een zoon van; Jacob Speelman en Hindrikkien Pepping. ( Jacob was 2x gehuwd o.a. me Gietien Frieling) de kinderen; Henriette. geboren 21.04.1902 Rock valley, (gehuwd met Lybe Marschell in Sanborn?. Maria Jeanette, Geertje Maria en Jeanetta Maria. Geboren in Rock Valley USA
Maria Jenetta Cator, is geboren 01.06.1852 's-Graveland en overleden 16.03. 1904 Oudshoorn, huwde op 19.03.1879 's- Graveland, huwelijkse bijlagen FS, plaatje 49, met Hendrik(us) van Woudenberg.
