From the notes of Paula HIEMENZ:
"Bartolomaus is mentioned for the first time in Dieburg in 1652 working as a Tanner at 23 Stonestreet. In 1665, Bartolomaus paid property tax on a house at 15 Rheingaustrasse. In 1742, Phillip Hyemenz was the owner of this same house and in 1803, Rochus Hyemenz owned it.
During the 30 year war, everyone in the family was a Tanner and considered financially well situated."
The HIEMENZ book states the known origin of our family, 'Bartolomaus came from Flanders over Mainz into Dieburg.
(Note: Paula HIEMENZ mentions that the move was to escape the Spanish Inquistition. There is some question as to when the HIEMENZ family left Flanders - we know it was between 1556 - 1652. Bartolomaus may not have been born in Flanders.)
From the internet on Flanders we may have a clue on where The HIEMENZ family came from:
Historical Flanders: County of Flanders
Main article: County of Flanders
Created in the year 862 as a feudal fief in West Francia , the County of Flanders was divided when its western districts fell under French rule in the late 12th century. The remaining parts of Flanders came under the rule of the counts of neighbouring Hainaut in 1191. The entire area passed in 1384 to the dukes of Burgundy , in 1477 to the Habsburg dynasty, and in 1556 to the kings of Spain . The western districts of Flanders came finally under French rule under successive treaties of 1659 (Artois), 1668, and 1678
Ted de Vries has reviewed my family tree and added the the Martin HIEMENZ branch that is now living in the Netherlands. Ted and his wife went to Dieburg and met the HIEMENZ clan during one of their reunions. He has found several new sources of information.
Nancy HIEMENZ van St. Cloud, Minnesota, USA en nog vele andere familieleden in Amerika, Duitsland en Nederland onderzoeken de herkomst van de familie HIEMENZ.
