Hello,
I am currently searching for a location in Belgium and need to consult a Dutch gazetteer from around 1750-1800. I have posted information on here regarding my ancestor, Andries Pelmans. According to the marriage registration which I have, he was from "Longelaar" in the province of Luijk (Liege). I have consulted with a few individuals from Liege who have told me that the equivalent for Longelaar in Liege would be a place called Lanklaar (or Lanklaer), which is in the Belgium province of Limbourg. I searched through the Belgian archives online and didn't find a match in the village of Lanklaar.
I also followed the opinion of one responder on this forum and searched the village of Anlgeur, which IS in the province of Liege. It, too, turned up empty.
I think if I consulted a Dutch gazetteer from 1750-1800 it might be able to provide me with a good answer.
For your information, I have looked in the "Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek der Nederlanden." However, the "L" section was written in 1845.
It has entries for "Langelaar" "Langeler" but no outright entry for "Longelaar" or "Lanklaar."
I would point out that the marriage license and the marriage registration don't appear to agree. Whereas the marriage license states "Longelaar onder 't Graafshap van Luijk," the marriage registration looks like "Tongelaar onder 't Graafshap van Luijk." I will say that the "Luijk" part looks like it has been altered a little, which may have it appear to be "Cuijk." This would be a different place altogether. However, I am more inclined to believe that the marriage license is more accurate, since it is the clearer of the two. Plus, Andries was a Catholic, which, to me, makes more sense in Liege than in Cuijk, which is in Noord-Brabant.
Any help with locating a gazetteer will be helpful.
Thank you!

Matt,
Not much help, but in the given period neither Luik nor Cuijk were a 'graafschap' (=earldom). Luik was ruled by a prince-bishop, Cuijk by the 'Staten-Generaal' in the Hague.

Can't help you either, but Brabant was (and still is) mainly a Catholic province and the name Pelmans did exist there! There is a place called Tongelre near Eindhoven......
It is however possible that the child was baptised under 'patronymic' so that his father's familyname was not registered, which could make it quite complicated to find his baptism.
There was a child 'Dries Pelmans' that died in 1759 leaving behind it's parents.

Thank you for your information.
Let me see if I can't ask a different question, then. Since I'm having trouble finding the location of his birth, I need to use what I know to help.
Andries was Eerste Scheepskok on the warship "Delft" that sank during the Battle of Camperdown (Kamperduin) in 1797. I know that a cook was not the same role as a soldier, but would there be military records that might be able to list his vital information, such as enlistment or muster rolls?
The only other information I have related to his position onboard the ship was that written in the report "Laatste Confereer- of Monster Rolle van 's-Lands Schip van Oorlog 'Delft'." However, according to the report, it only deals with pension for his widow (20 guildens). (Andries was one of the few that drowned!)
Does anyone have any good military contacts that might be able to assist?

Not found an on-line source but may be if this leaflet shows a research opportunity for you.
Kind regards, Ben

Ronald,
After reading some of the other bits of information by the other contributors, would you consider the location Tongelaar in Noord-Brabant to be a 'graafschap'? This might possibly answer my question about where Andries was born, should you believe it to be.
