It is a mystery as to who above Barend Buys' parents were. That has been a primary motivation for me to start the Y-DNA journey. There are in fact many people with the surname Buys in the Netherlands and many of them emigrated to the US. A number of Dutch Buys people also emigrated after 1900 to South Africa. I have not been able to find any links with them on paper or via Y-DNA. It would be good to keep in mind that the VOC was a Dutch company and their obvious language used in business was Dutch. It would be fair to assume that they also Dutchified names and surnames. I commissioned professional German genealogists to try and find Barend Buys in German archives, especially in areas would could be Braunsweigh (Brunswick/Bronswijk) and while they could find name or surnames which could be interpreted as Barend or Buys, they could not find a combination. So, we don't know what did Barend Buys tell the sedelverkoper who wrote him down as Barend Buys. We also have no reference point on his age at any point in his life. That is a possible reason for always not finding him. If one contact the Rijksargief in Amsterdam, they very swiftly tell one that Barend Buys was of German decent. It does of course not mean that he was after all Dutch but to proof that, someone will have to spend weeks if not months at the Rijksargief to suss it out. Between myself and two other researchers older than myself, we have spend well over a 100 years of effort to solve this riddle. The answer is still out there
