Not so long ago it was very popular to have bedlinens as well as underwear made from linen, rather than cotton. (those were the only fibres available).
LInen fibre has a natural wax covering and therefore does not dirty that easily! And when one has to change, one can leave it in a corner untill the weather is better (wintertime!) for washing and drying outside. Because of the wax covering, it washes clean easily.
Of course this caused the underwear to be more bulky, resulting in bulkier outer wear.
And styling followed this need.
Een hele leuke website is ook http://www.20eeuwennederland.nl/ - daar vind je niet alleen informatie over kleding, maar ook over andere zaken zoals huizen, huisraad, rechtspraak, scholing etc. Alles is ingedeeld in periodes. Veel plaatjes te vinden ook.
Op Hyves is er de Kostuumgeschiedenis-hyve.
