Hi,

My Dutch is not so good so I hope it is OK with an English comment.

I am wondering if Amsterdam Harbour in the early 1700s made customs documents for goods that left the country, and if so, do they still exist. I am researching the history of some valuables I have that stem from Amsterdam.

I don't think Dutch customs already existed around 1700. You may find the information you're looking for in the ships manifest.

Dear Rolf,

The Dutch have made special ships with small deck and larg round hulls with the even large hold for trading. With these small decks they didn't pay much customs. The shipsdesigner was a man from Hoorn in the 15th century. But you must be more exact with your information. What do you want to know? Ofcourse have had every strading-ship a cargo-list and the most trading-ships have had a transport insurance policy. We have had the first Bourse for these insurances. When you want just in general an indication of prices and our valuables from products or things? When it have to do with the transports to America you have had to do with the W.I.C. The West Indian Company, that excisted around 1621 and is ended around 1796. Do you have a name of a ship? Than you must look or it was an own ship from the cap'tain/trader or was it a ship that belonged to the WIC? Than you must know from which chamber  it was. Just as the V.O.C. (in English the United East Indian Company). For instance Jan de Vries cap'tain and owner from ships and buildings. He let out his ships to the WIC. He have had property in Southern America, the Caribean Isles, in New Amsterdam later New York. But also in Groningen his home-town and in Hamburg and Poland. And in every harbor you have had a water bailiff who had to inspected every ship and the papers and books from the ship. For instance the cargo, but also the list with crew, for instance are they in their free will member of the crew and are they not Chang Hayed ( are they not intoxicated by gin and/ or have had a clap at the back of their head with a sack full with wetsand). Everyone must sign the list. And the same control happened with their own liquids and foods written in the shipbooks. But also with the cargo lists for trade. Even the stones used as weight under in the ship and that have to left the ship at the place of destination. With these stones they have build buildings and fortifications in South Africa in Asia in India at the Isles  around it and the East Indian Isles.  But some archives are only open for scientific research. When you are for instance student you must asked such at your University and they made contact with a Dutch University. But treasure diggers find often a close door.
