Could someone please tell me where this couple are originally from? They were married in Amsterdam 16 October 1738.
.His name is Jurriaan Voorwerk and her name is Anna Geertruij Erdtsick. I can't read his place of origin at all but apparently she is from Embrik (wherever that is) Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year to all.
The marriage registration states that Jurriaan is from Kleij and that she is from Embrik.
There is also a marriage of a (brother?) Jan Voorwerk who is also from Kleij. So I think Kleij is probably right.
Both names are probably written phonetically.
I will try to check a list which contains many wrongly written place names.
Embrik sounds very much like Emmerich
Kleij could be Kleef/Cleve. I could not find in the list of wrongly spelled place names. The nearest short name in the list is Kleijs which is actually Klais in Germany, but I would not yet make that the same as Kleij
Thank you for your help which is much appreciated.
Thank you so much for your help. Looks like Embrik will remain a mystery. I'm thinking along the lines of Germany as well but who knows? I appreciate your help and many thanks.
Thank you so very much! Another problem solved. Ha. Cheers! Kitty
I read the marriage registrations as Jurriaan and Jan Voorwerk both being from Fleij, not Kleij, which is the present Fleien (Sleeswijk-Holstein) according to this list. For Jan this is especially clear, compare the F in Fluweeleburgwal in the same registration here.
I checked the reference to Fluwelenburgwal and I agree with Peter, it should be read as Fleij
Yes, you are so right. I never noticed it before until you mentioned it. Good detective work! Thank you so much.
